Kanpur has no shortage of places selling watches — from mall counters in Civil Lines to small counters in local markets. The difference between them shows up months later, when a strap loosens, a battery dies or a warranty claim has to be filed.
This guide lists the checks worth making before you pay, whichever showroom you walk into.
1. Ask for the warranty card, not just the bill
Every genuine watch from Titan, Casio, Fastrack, Sonata, Fossil or Maxima ships with a manufacturer warranty card. A good showroom stamps and dates it in front of you, along with a proper bill.
If a seller offers only a handwritten slip or their own 'shop warranty', the piece may be grey-market stock that authorised service centres will not accept.
2. Check the packaging and the model code
Original packaging carries the model code, and that code should match the dial, the card and the bill. Photograph all three before you leave the counter — it takes ten seconds and makes any later service visit much easier.
3. Compare price against the MRP, not against another shop
Deep 'discounts' quoted against an inflated figure mean nothing. Ask for the printed MRP and look at what you are actually paying against it. Seasonal and festive offers from the brands themselves are real; invented discounts are not.
4. Test the fit before you pay
- Case size against your wrist — 38-40 mm suits most Indian wrists, 42 mm and above reads as a statement piece.
- Bracelet links removed and refitted while you wait, at no extra charge.
- Clasp opening and closing smoothly, with no sharp edges.
- Water resistance rating: 30 m is splash-proof only, 50 m survives handwashing, 100 m is for swimming.
5. Ask what happens after the sale
Battery replacement, strap changes and bracelet resizing are the three things you will need most often. A showroom that does them in store saves you a trip to a service centre every time.

6. Prefer a showroom with a long local record
